Instead of immediately going to college, he worked as an apprentice at Cornèr Bank in Lugano to gain knowledge in accounting and finance.

Fascinated by foreign currency trading, he joined a training program at the bank’s Securities Department. Ermotti earned a Swiss federal banking expert qualification. Later in his career, he graduated from Oxford University’s Advanced Management Program.

Career

After finishing his apprenticeship at Cornèr Bank, Ermotti was promoted to trade. In 1986, he joined Citibank in Zurich, starting by selling equity-linked products and later becoming a Resident Vice President. In 1987, Ermotti moved to the Swiss branch of Merrill Lynch in Zurich, where he spent 16 years.
