After dropping out of school, Tommy Chong started his music career playing in an R&B band, The Shades, in the 1960s.
After performing a few gigs, the group adopted another name, Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers. They signed with Gordy Records and released “Does Your Mama Know About Me.” The hit song reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.
Chong met Cheech Marin in 1968 in Vancouver, and the two started performing stand-up shows and releasing songs.
